We all know that guy on facebook. He posts a new song every 5 minutes, bombards us with videos and gig dates, and posts a new bad ass photo of himself every time we turn around. Ugh! Not this dude again. We are all sick of him, his music, and we could care less. We HATE that guy. Are you THAT guy? Admit it, you do it too, and so do 95% of artists out there. Musicians tend to forget that they are human and not just a commodity.

The thing about social media is…you are supposed to socialize! Think about it; if you were at a party would you stand in the middle of the room and say,” look at me look at me”, or would actually speak with people individually and try to get to know them? If your fans/friends can get to know a little bit about you as a person, they are much more likely to listen to your music, come to your gigs and support your endeavors. No one can relate to 50 song posts a day, it’s a drag. So we delete, block, hide the news feed, or just hope the person gets tired and goes away!

Lots of artists have told me lately that they don’t know what to say on social media. It’s really no different than having a conversation with a friend. Pick a topic, (hopefully something appropriate and interesting) and let people know your thoughts. Seen a great film? Ask your fans if they’ve seen it. Read a great blog or news article? Start a discussion about it. Be yourself, relax and get to know the people you are ASKING to support your art. Instead of posting hundreds of pictures of yourself, how about posting a couple pics of your fans? I guarantee they will love it and others might just show up at your gigs to see themselves on your social media pages. Show your fans you are HUMAN for goodness sakes! Start letting people know who you are as a person, and they will be much more likely to relate to you as an artist. Turn the camera around and point it at your fans. After all, your fans hold all the power over whether or not your music is heard.

So, don’t be THAT guy. We would hate to have to delete you:-)

  1. I’m so glad I am not that guy. I hate to be predictable or a bore. Thanks Gheezi for reaffirming my original thought of posting things that are interesting and not overdoing the sales pitch.

Some of the bands I fan on Reverb Nation spam the hell out of me.

I would actually liked to get flagged for life from facebook. Sometimes bad publicity is good
